Travel and Accommodation

[Update 10/11] Raleigh is mostly back to normal after Hurricane Matthew, though areas of eastern North Carolina are still affected. The NC Department of Transportation maintains updated information about any highway and road closures.

Getting Here

Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, sits on the eastern third of the state and is readily accessible by nearby interstates 40, 85, and 95. NC State University is located about a mile to the west of downtown.

Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is serviced by all major airlines and includes many direct flight options. NC State’s north campus and nearby hotels are 15 minutes by car from the airport. Taxi fare runs $35 each way. Some hotels offer shuttle services. Triangle Transit offers inexpensive bus service ($2) between RDU and points in Raleigh near to the conference locations.

Raleigh is also served by Amtrak with a downtown train station.

Staying Here

The conference has arranged for blocks of rooms at two nearby hotels: the DoubleTree and the spanking new Aloft, both on Hillsborough Street and both within easy walking distance to Tompkins Hall.

    • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Raleigh – Brownstone – University
      Conference code VIC, $144/night
1707 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27605

    • Aloft Raleigh

Raleigh features a number of additional hotels and options for accommodation, many with access to Capital Area Transit (CAT) bus service.

Parking

If possible, we recommend that guests at the conference hotels park there and walk to Tompkins Hall (see below for directions). Otherwise, free parking is available after 5 p.m. on Friday and all weekend in the North Hall Lot across the street from Tompkins Hall. Hillsborough Street has metered parking along both sides. Towards the Doubletree Hotel and environs can be found free street parking, though some areas have time restrictions. Hotels have their own parking arrangements for guests ($6/day at Aloft, complimentary at Doubletree).

During business hours on Friday, visitors can seek a visiting parking permit or try one of the paid lots on campus. See NC State’s Visitor Parking for all the details.

Getting Around

Please see the Google Map of conference locations.

For walking directions from the Doubletree Hotel:

From the main lobby of the Doubletree, turn left onto Hillsborough Street. Follow the sidewalk to the roundabout and cross carefully. Drivers should give you right of way, but there is no stoplight. Please make sure they see you! Continue on the sidewalk past the Bell Tower. Tompkins Hall will be the first large building on the left. Total walking distance is 0.3 miles or about 7 minutes.

For walking directions from the Aloft Hotel:

Tompkins Hall is basically across the street. From the main lobby of the Aloft, turn right onto Hillsborough Street. Cross Hillsborough at the stoplight at Enterprise street. Turn right, continue on the sidewalk, and Tompkins Hall will be the first large building on the left.
